Variablegrid Plus  ·  For EV drivers

Your car just got a job.

Plug in the way you always have. Plus pays you for every kilowatt-hour you charge, at home or in your building's garage, and quietly gives the grid a hand while it does it.

You earn

$0.10/ kWh

Every site. Every charger.

No points. No gift cards. No tiers to unlock. Real money, from your first session.

What it is worth

The only variable is how much you drive.

Your credit tracks actual metered energy through your charger. Drive more, earn more. Nothing to claim, nothing to submit, no receipts to keep.

Light, 600 km150$15$180
Average, 1,200 km300$30$360
Heavy, 2,000 km500$50$600

Illustrative, at 25 kWh per 100 km and $0.10 per kWh. Your credit accrues in the Varian app and you can withdraw it once the balance reaches $50.

The same rate applies whether you charge on a driveway or in a shared parkade, and it applies to the first kilowatt-hour as much as the thousandth. There is no starting tier to climb out of and no usage threshold to cross before the real rate begins.

What Plus costs

Nothing. That is the whole answer.

There is no cost to enrol and no monthly subscription. You are not buying a service, you are turning on a credit against charging you were going to do anyway.

$0

To enrol

No sign-up cost and no deposit. If you already have a Variablegrid charger, there is nothing to buy.

$0.10

Back per kWh

From your first session, at the same rate everywhere, with no threshold to cross first.

$360

A year, at average driving

1,200 km a month, credited at $0.10 per kWh. Light drivers earn less, heavy drivers earn more, and nothing caps it.

Incentive payments are not subject to sales tax.

How it works

Plug in. We do the rest.

STEP 01

Plug in.

Enrol once, then charge the way you always have. There is nothing to schedule and nothing to remember.

STEP 02

We do the shifting.

Adaptive Power Management moves your charging into the cheapest hours and across whatever capacity your home or building actually has.

STEP 03

You get credited.

$0.10 per kWh accrues on every eligible session and shows up on your monthly statement in the app.

STEP 04

You keep control.

Need a full battery in an hour? Hit Priority Charge and the car charges straight through. Your call, every time.

What Plus includes

Most programs pay you for data. Plus pays you for flexibility.

A cashback program is one line item. Plus is the whole advanced charging layer: the credit, the grid participation, the shifting, and the controls, in one membership.

01  ·  Cashback

$0.10 back on every kilowatt-hour

Funded by clean fuel credits your charging generates. We register, verify and sell them, then hand the value back to you.

  • Flat rate, day one. No starting tier, no kWh threshold, no waiting period before the real rate begins.
  • Same rate everywhere. $0.10 per kWh whether you charge in a driveway or a shared parkade.
  • Paid in cash, not points. Your balance accrues in the Varian app and you withdraw it once it reaches $50, through a secure payment provider. We never see or store your banking details.
  • Free to join. No enrolment cost, no subscription, and no sales tax on the incentive.

02  ·  Grid services

Demand response, handled for you

Your charger becomes part of a fleet that can stand down when the system is tight. You are enrolled automatically and you can always override.

  • No event texts to answer. Enrolment is automatic and the response is automatic. Nothing lands in your inbox demanding a decision at dinner.
  • Short and infrequent. Events run in the evening peak, a handful of times per season, with advance notice in the app.
  • Always overridable. Opt out of any single event, or hit Priority Charge and charge through it.
  • On the record. Your statement shows every event you supported, so the hand you gave the grid is visible, not vague.

03  ·  Smart charging

The cheapest hours, without setting a timer

The part nobody else automates. Plus does not hand you a scheduling screen and call it smart charging.

  • Time-of-use aware. Sessions move into the low-rate window wherever your utility has one, so you are paying the cheap rate without thinking about it.
  • Sized to your service. Charging fits the amperage your panel or your building actually has, so nothing trips and no upgrade is needed.
  • Learns your pattern. Plus works from your real plug-in and departure habits, not a generic overnight window.
  • Fair sharing. On a shared charger, round-robin allocation instead of first-come, first-served.

04  ·  Control

Your stall, your rules

The Varian app on iOS and Android. Everything Plus does in the background is visible, and everything is overridable.

  • Priority Charge. One tap and the car charges straight through, peak or not.
  • Session view. Check what your car is drawing from the couch, and see every session's energy as it happens.
  • Your credit in your pocket. This month's kilowatt-hours, this month's credit, and your running balance, any time you want to look.
  • Lockouts. At a shared site, stop anyone else from plugging into your charger.

Where Plus works

A driveway is easy. A parkade is the hard part.

Every other pay-per-kWh program in Canada is single-family only, because a shared garage needs coordination they do not have. Plus covers both, at the same rate.

At home

House, semi or townhome

  • Charger and Varian app set up by your installer or your dealer, working from day one
  • No panel upgrade, no service call to the utility
  • Coordinated against the rest of your house so the main breaker holds
  • $0.10 per kWh on everything you put in the car

At your building

Condo, apartment or fleet site

  • Your stall, on a site already running Variablegrid
  • Fair sharing across the garage, so you are never queuing for a plug
  • Building never trips, no matter how many neighbours buy an EV
  • $0.10 per kWh, the same rate a house gets

Not sure whether your building is a Variablegrid site? Ask us and we will tell you in a day. If it is not, we will talk to your strata.

Standard, not an upsell

Included at every Plus site.

Every space EV-ready, no queuing
Fair round-robin sharing
Never trips the panel or the building
Time-of-use ready out of the box
Priority Charge on demand
Lock your stall to your car

Plus versus a cashback program

Same money. Considerably more program.

How to enrol

Two ways in, depending on what is already on your wall.

Enrolment takes a few minutes and costs nothing. You are not signing up for a service, you are switching on a credit on charging you already do.

Path one

Already have a Variablegrid charger

Enrol right here, in about a minute. Tell us the email on your Variablegrid account, which charger you have, and whether you charge at a stand-alone home or in a multi-unit building. We switch Plus on and confirm by email, usually within one business day.

  • Works on the RS48, the RS40, and either one paired with VarianHOME
  • Nothing about your charging changes on the day you enrol
  • In a building that is not a Plus site yet? Tell us anyway. We will let you know what is involved and talk to your strata or property manager ourselves.

Path two

Do not have one yet

Buy a Variablegrid charger from an authorized dealer. They will size it to your service, arrange the install, and enrol you in Plus at the same time, so the credit is running before you plug in for the first time.

  • Authorized dealers across Canada, including automotive dealer networks and electrical contractors
  • Program pricing on the charger, and the dealer handles the paperwork
  • Ask them to confirm your enrolment before you leave

One thing worth saying plainly

We never see or store your banking details. When you withdraw your credit, you enter your payment information directly with a secure third-party payment provider. It does not pass through Variablegrid, and we hold none of it. Not at enrolment, not at payout, not ever.

Questions

The ones people actually ask.

How do I enrol?

If you already have a Variablegrid charger, use the enrolment form on this page: the email on your account, which charger you have, and whether you charge at a stand-alone home or in a multi-unit building. We switch Plus on and confirm by email, usually within one business day. No installer and no appointment.

If you do not have a charger yet, buy one from an authorized Variablegrid dealer. They size it to your electrical service, arrange the install, and enrol you at the same time.

What does Plus cost?

Nothing to enrol and nothing per month. There is no sign-up cost, no deposit, no subscription and no minimum, and your incentive is not subject to sales tax.

Where does the money come from?

Canada's Clean Fuel Regulations require producers and importers of gasoline and diesel to lower the carbon intensity of the fuel they sell. They can meet part of that obligation by buying compliance credits, and electric vehicle charging generates those credits. Every kilowatt-hour you put in your car is a small, verifiable reduction with a market value.

Variablegrid does the regulatory work: metering the energy, reporting it, getting it verified, registering the credits and selling them. Your $0.10 per kWh is your share, paid whether the credit market is having a good quarter or a bad one.

Why does Variablegrid hold the credits instead of me?

Because a household cannot register one. Credits are created under the Clean Fuel Regulations by the charging network operator, through federal registration, monthly reporting, third-party verification and a government credit tracking system. That machinery costs more per year than a single home's credits are worth, which is why no program in Canada offers credits directly to drivers.

Plus is the trade: we carry the registration, the verification and the market risk, and you take a fixed, predictable $0.10 per kWh instead of an uncertain credit price. Participation includes our use of your charging data for grid services and environmental credit programs, set out plainly in the Plus terms.

How and when do I get paid?

Your credit accrues month by month in the Varian app. Once the balance reaches $50 you can withdraw it, and payment is handled through a secure third-party provider. You enter your details directly with them, so Variablegrid never sees or stores your banking information.

If you do not hit $50 in a given month the balance simply carries forward. Nothing expires.

What happens to my car during a grid event?

Your session pauses or slows for a short window, usually inside the evening peak, then resumes. Events are infrequent, you get notice in the app, and you can opt out of any individual event before it starts. If you need the battery regardless, Priority Charge overrides everything.

The design target is roughly one kilowatt of reduction per driver per event. That is meaningful relief for the grid and, on an overnight charge, an amount of delay you will not notice.

Will my car always be ready when I need it?

Yes. Plus works backwards from when you actually leave, not from a fixed timer, and it keeps a margin. In the rare case you need a full battery sooner than planned, Priority Charge gives you the fastest charge your service can deliver, immediately.

Which chargers qualify?

Any Variablegrid charger, including the RS40 and RS48, on its own or bundled with the VarianHOME energy management system. Chargers at Variablegrid-managed buildings and fleet sites are already eligible. The charger has to stay online and connected, because energy that is never reported cannot be credited.

Can I leave?

Yes. Plus itself has no lock-in. The one thing to know: if you bought your charger at a discount through a dealer program, leaving inside the first 36 months can mean repaying a prorated share of that discount. That is spelled out at the point of sale and in your terms, and it never applies to credit you have already earned.

Do I lose the app I use today?

No. The Varian app is where Plus lives: sessions, credit balance, Priority Charge, lockouts and event notices, all in one place, on iOS and Android.

Where do you charge?

Variablegrid Plus is available to drivers on eligible Variablegrid equipment and at participating Variablegrid-managed sites, and is enabled at the site level. Credits are calculated on eligible metered charging activity recorded through enrolled equipment and reported to Variablegrid. Participation includes demand response and load shifting, and Variablegrid's use of charging data for grid services and environmental credit programs, as set out in the Plus terms. Demand response events are short, infrequent and overridable.
