As the electric vehicle (EV) industry grows in response to climate change, the push towards EV adoption is supported by various rebates across Canada. These incentives further reduce the costs associated with electrifying vehicles, particularly the installation of private EV chargers in residential, commercial, and multi-unit buildings. Here is a comprehensive overview of the rebates and incentives available to Canadians that make the convenience of private charging more affordable than ever.Â
Canada Wide
Since 2019, The Zero Emissions Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP) has been offering significant rewards for multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs), fleets, and workplaces across Canada that have committed to making EV upgrades. For sites installing 20 or more EV chargers, ZEVIP offers up to $5,000 per charger, covering permits, installations, environmental assessments, and overhead, and subsidizing up to 50% of the total costs. With a robust budget of up to $5 million per project, ZEVIP supports Canada’s goal of no internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle sales by 2035 (Transport Canada). Learn about their generous offerings here.Â
British Columbia
In British Columbia, rebates are available for residents who get their electricity from both BC Hydro and FortisBC, which can be combined with federal ZEVIP savings. Â
BC Hydro
BC Hydro covers up to $350 or 50% of installation costs for single-family homes installing an EV charger, plus an additional $200 top-up for the purchase of an EV power management device. Variablegrid’s EV chargers and power management devices are among the most affordable and innovative on the list. Offering even more savings for homeowners through its intelligent energy optimization, Variablegrid’s system is the only EV power management device listed that deploys Dynamic Load Balancing to modulate EV charging.Â
Businesses within BC Hydro’s service region can save up to 50% of associated EV charger installation costs, with up to $2,000 in savings per charger, and 50% of planning costs for fleet conversion. However, MURBs can benefit from the most savings; up to $137,000 in rebates through the all-in EV Ready rebate program, which funds all aspects of electrification. For more details, read our BC Hydro Rebate blog or visit their website.Â
FortisBC
FortisBC offers similar savings for its utility users. Single-family homeowners can receive up to $350 (or up to 50% of costs) for EV home charger installation. MURBs or workplaces can save up to $5,000 per level 2 charging station (or up to 75% of costs) with $25,000 available per application, which includes five free hours of support from an EV charging advisor to ensure a seamless process.Â
FortisBC has also teamed up with CleanBC Go Electric to offer a fleets program that covers 50% of the project costs associated with installing EV chargers for fleet use, with a maximum of $50,000 per fleet. Click here to learn more about all FortisBC’s incentives.Â
Ontario
The EV Station Fund, subsidized by the Atmospheric Fund, offers savings for residents of Ontario’s Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. They cover up to 50% of installation costs or $5,000 per level 2 charge port, with an additional rebate of $500 for advisory support on installing the charger. The EV Station Fund also offers rebates for the development of public charging infrastructure. Learn more about all their offerings here.Â
Quebec
The Roulez Vert Program through Quebec’s Transition énérgetic offers $600 for single-family home owners to install a private EV charging station. They offer up to $5,000 or 50% of costs per charging station for MURBs and workplaces, which typically require more chargers. Learn more about their offerings here.
Manitoba
Lead the Charge Manitoba is a program run through Manitoba Motor Dealers Association. They will cover up to 50% of the total costs of installing EV chargers in the workplace, or $5,000 per connector for every level 2 charger installed, with even greater savings for fast chargers. Their goal is to make EV chargers more accessible to everyone on-the-go and to put participating businesses on the map for their commitments to a sustainable future. Click here to learn more.
New Brunswick
New Brunswick’s Plug-in-NB offers unique rebates for single-family homeowners, covering up to 50% of costs for home charger installation, or up to $750, when people receive a vehicle rebate through their program. Plug-in-NB’s goal is to encourage sustainable transportation by making EV charging more accessible for homeowners. Learn more here.Â
Prince Edward Island
The Government of Prince Edward Island boasts savings for those who take advantage of their Universal EV incentive, offering a $750 charging discount that can be applied to the purchase and installation of a level 2 private EV charger. Learn about it here.
Northwest Territories
Northwest Territories’ Arctic Energy Alliance is planning to offer single-family homeowners up to $500 for each level 2 EV charging station they install. While funding has not yet been confirmed, they are accepting applications, so check the status of their offerings by clicking their website here.Â
Some provinces not listed still offer rebates for the purchase of EVs or loans for EV charger installation, while others have exhausted their allocated funding, indicating increasing demand.Â
These rebates combined with the abundance of other resources that are making EV more affordable illustrate how now is the best time to unlock the convenience of a private charger.
